Audience

Recommended for anyone involved in designing and project estimating wide area campus design where centralized powering of remote devices is required but the limitations of traditional PoE is exhausted.

Pre-requisite experience:

No pre-requisite knowledge is required for this course. Previous exposure to enterprise infrastructure environments and a general understanding of IT and LANs would be helpful though.

Objectives:

This course is aimed at helping the student design a powered fiber cable system starting with evaluating the 'endpoint' devices required by the customer and then working back down, selecting the cable type and power supplies required. Once this information has been obtained a BOM or Bill of Materials can be drawn up. The course helps students select the parts required but also advises and prompts them to look further at what other components might be required to ensure essential costings aren't overlooked.

Key Topics:

  • Endpoint Evaluation
  • Pathway Considerations
  • Cable Selection, & Evaluation
  • Equipment Room Requirements
  • Additional Components
  • Cable & Component Selection
  • Building a BOM (Bill of Materials)
  • Power Supply Selection
  • Sample Spreadsheets
