The installations include local area networks, copper twisted pair cabling and internal and external fiber links. The course looks at the most common field testers available for both copper and fiber media and discusses how to test successfully, what to test and the best methods of testing and troubleshooting.

Pre-requisite experience:

This course is an ideal follow up for students who have completed the ACT I Installing Premises Cabling course [SP3801], but this is not mandatory.

Objectives

  • Understand the different field testing requirements and methods together with the latest standards and specifications
  • Look at the differences among Certification, Verification, and Testing
  • Understand why visual testing is almost as important as electronic testing
  • Investigate the range of field testers on the market, their capabilities, what they test, and if the tests meet standards requirements
  • Pre-testing requirements, set up, cleanliness and tools
  • Ensure correct test procedures are used when testing, including parameters, what to test in a link and which components in the link are included.
  • Understand the test results, analysis, fault finding and repair
  • Comparison of test results against predicted ones
  • Understand requirements for test documentation in line with the standards
